The Seth Rich ‘Scandal’ Shows That Fox News Is Morally Bankrupt | Foreign Policy
If you don’t watch Fox News, read Breitbart or the Drudge Report, or listen to Rush Limbaugh, you likely don’t have any idea who Seth Rich was. If, however, you are a devotee of those dubious news sources, you have been fed a grab bag of unsubstantiated allegations designed to make you think that Rich was murdered by some kind of Democratic Party cabal for having revealed the party’s secrets to WikiLeaks.
It’s a rare day indeed when a single BigCorp can dominate the field of business ethics in such a demonstrative way as Fox News, the darling of ‘fair & balanced’ journalism (sticks a finger down his throat).
So it’s with great pleasure that Harvey’s Blog nominates both Fox News for the Joseph Gobbles Award for post-truth and its ever trustworthy anchorman, Sean Hannity for the Moby’s Dick Award for excellence in ethics.
In our most recent post, Harvey’s Blog opined on the posthumous nomination of Roger Ailes for a lifetime achievement award in ethics we haven’t even invented yet! But inventing things that aren’t true, may never be true, or couldn’t ever be true unless transported to an alternate universe, was Roger Ailes’ journalistic superpower at Fox News.
Sean Hannity is certainly in this mold. Literally. Yes, immersed in the same slimy mold that coats everything Fox News does.
Sean Hannity, one of the last of the old guard hired by Ailes to rule prime time, nevertheless devoted three separate segments of his show last week to the “DNC murder mystery.” On Sunday morning, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was pushing the same allegation about Rich’s “assassination” on Fox & Friends. Lou Dobbs has spouted these theories on Fox Business Network, too.
Fox’s tasteless conspiracy-mongering has been denounced by the Rich family, which wants the far-right to stop exploiting their son’s tragic death…
Fox News has since recanted this conspiracy theory and issued the following statement:
On May 16, a story was posted on the Fox News website on the investigation into the 2016 murder of DNC Staffer Seth Rich,” a statement on the Fox News website said. “The article was not initially subjected to the high degree of editorial scrutiny we require for all our reporting. Upon appropriate review, the article was found not to meet those standards and has since been removed.
Say what? Fox News uses a ‘high degree of editorial scrutiny we require for all our reporting’?? Well, knock me down with a feather! I didn’t know that! Should we withdraw Sean Hannity’s nomination for the Moby’s Dick Award? Naw! He’s still spouting his garbage even after his paymaster admitted they’d been… dare we say it … ‘less than ethical’.
Hannity, during the segment airing just before 4 p.m., notably didn’t mention that Fox News had just retracted its week-old story on Rich. But the host returned a few minutes later during a commercial break to defiantly state that he wasn’t walking anything back.
“And all you in the liberal media, I am not he said.or Fox . I retracted nothing,”
Well said, Mr. Hannity! Good for you for sticking up for yourself! When even your own organization… world-renown for conjuring fanciful conspiracy theories… shit-cans its latest dollop of dung, you soldier on regardless. No one is going to sully your reputation for being ‘fair & balanced’, even your bosses at Fox News!
Sean Hannity has thrown down the gauntlet for all of this year’s nominees for the Moby’s Dick Award. Somehow we think a new challenger is just around the corner. Stay tuned.
